Pro surfer Ricardo Dos Santos has sadly passed away after being shot three times near his home in Brazil by an off-duty policemen. Ricardo’s grandfather who was there when he was murdered explained what happened to the media in Brazil and the story is truly sad! While Ricardo and his grandfather were repairing Ricardo’s house they noticed a couple guys snorting coke directly in front of Ricardo’s residence. Ricardo’s grandfather walked by the guys and the two men started laughing most likely because they were high or embarrassed. Ricardo went over to them to ask what their deal was and they said to leave them alone. Then Ricardo’s grandfather confronted the two man and said, “C’mon, snorting coke at 8am in front of a family home, this is not even good for you.”. After a few more words were exchanged the two men then took off and the ordeal was over… but tragically it wasn’t! Ricardo and his Grandfather went inside their house to grab some tools and when they walked outside one of the thugs who is a confirmed Brazilian cop ambushed Ricardo and his grandfather. Ricardo Dos Santos was shot three times and died after fighting for his life in a local hospital. The surfing world is in complete shock and can’t begin to understand this random act of violence.
In 2012 Ricardo received the Andy Irons Award for Most Committed Performance after winning the Billabong Pro Tahiti Trials and beating Jordy Smith, Taj Burrow and Kelly Slater in the main event! Later that same year he won the Surfline Wave of the Winter and was awarded a $25,000 check after pulling into a huge barrel at Pipeline in Hawaii.
